Justin Hyland

Justin Hyland is from Koroit in south-western Victoria. He completed VCE in 2025 at Brauer College where he was an outstanding student achieving an ATAR of 93.15 – studying English, Math Methods, Specialist Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Justin received numerous academic accolades from Brauer College including Year 12 Academic Excellence awards, the Blake Stormer Memorial Award and distinctions in various subjects.

Justin was described by his VCE staff leader as “exactly the type of student that reminds teachers of what is best about our profession” and further, that he “has the makings of a real leader and will be successful at whatever he chooses to do”.

Outside of school, Justin has been involved with local basketball and cricket clubs for many years. Justin loves the camaraderie of team sports and has enjoyed coaching and co-ordinating activities in his basketball club and, more recently, “stepping up” into the role of captain. He has mentored and guided younger teammates and has demonstrated strong leadership skills along the way.

Aside from his school and sporting commitments, Justin also balanced part-time work from a young age to support himself and his family. He also worked over the summer break at alocal pharmacy in an effort to raise funds for his tertiary education.

Upon meeting and getting to know Justin, one quickly learns that he has bucket loads of tenacity. Following the tragic loss of his father during Year 12, Justin has shown remarkable strength and determination in the pursuit of his academic goals despite personal challenges and financial hardship. His resilience is extraordinary. Justin has a sharp sense of humour, is quietly confident and clearly has loads of humility and respect for those around him.

Justin will be embarking on a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University and has been offered residence at St Mary’s College. Given his passion for physics, at this stage, Justinplans to pursue a career in engineering. The scholarship judges were left in no doubt that Justin would become a valued member of his College community.

Justin Hyland is the very worthy recipient of the 8th Salt Creek Scholarship.
